The NEXT ability Barriers (バリア) allows the user to create and manipulate barriers of any shape or size. It was first mistaken to be an ability to create energy beams, as Jake Martinez frequently launched razor-thin barriers much like bullets.
Like this, the ability can be used offensively to damage opponents from any distance. It is currently unknown, however, if barriers shot in this fashion are capable of rebounding off reflective objects (and would thus require some level of aiming precision when firing).
Jake is even shown using this ability like a laser to burn any designs into a surface. When used defensively, a barrier appears as a series of outflowing rings which repel the user's opponent upon contact. These barriers seem to disappear once an opponent has been repelled.
Currently, this ability and Telepathy are the only ones used in conjunction with another ability (by Jake Martinez, the only known NEXT with more than one power).
Mr. Black's ability is also categorized as Barrier. Although his version the barrier is formed in front of his hands, in the shape of translucent purple hexagons. Unlike Jake's version who forms barrier throughout his body, and has offensive capabilities. Mr. Black's version is shown to be functioning as a floating shield that gets stronger and bigger depending on his focus, and it can be seen from the color and size of the barrier, the less focus he has the smaller and faded is the barrier. He was shown to be able to form 2 separate barriers from his hands to defend against attack from two different direction, although rarely as it requires separate focus and the resulting barrier is weak, so he is always shown to create one barrier with both hands instead. The amount of barrier seems to be only limited by his focus, and he is capable of moving the barrier to his will.
The Barrier itself is strong enough (at full focus) to be able to stop a speeding car and defended against bullets also protected people from fallen debris and it doesn't seem like the user was affected by the force received.
Mr. Black seems to understand his ability well enough to know it's properties and how it works. He understands his barrier relies on his focus and has trained his focus so he can create barrier regardless of situation. He also has shown to have the various idea of his barrier use, such as crushing people with his barrier. His barrier was able to soften his landing as he was falling while holding Magical Cat. The barrier was shown to significantly cushion their fall although it shatters right after and both of them was blown-away by the remaining force.
After his fight with Fugan and Mugan, he wanted to develop his power's offensive potential. He was shown to be able to not only expand, but also compress his barrier into a staff, although the staff breaks before it can be used to attack. Another idea he got is to create multiple layer of barriers and shaping them into a cone, then he would rotate the barrier like a drill. The drill barrier was proven to be strong enough on offensive to damage L. L. Audun who has Hundred Power active at the time. The downside of his move is still his own focus, as it seems to break easily every time he attempted to do it.
